Discount Calculator: Run the Sale Before You Run the Sale
A discount looks simple until you ask the real question: does the promotion still leave you a profit? This calculator does both jobs at once. It shows the customer-facing final price and savings, and — if you add your unit cost — it tells you exactly what margin you keep after the markdown.
How It Works: The Formulas
- Amount saved = Original price × (Discount % / 100)
- Final price = Original price − Amount saved
- Profit at sale price = Final price − Cost (when cost is provided)
- Margin at sale price = Profit / Final price × 100
A Worked Example
An item lists at $120 and you run a 25% off promotion. The customer saves $120 × 0.25 = $30 and pays $90. Now add your cost of $60: your profit at the sale price is $90 − $60 = $30, a margin of 33.3%. The discount is aggressive but still profitable. Push it to 50% off, however, and the price falls to $60 — exactly your cost — meaning you make nothing. This is the moment most "doorbuster" sales quietly turn into losses.
Practical Use Cases
- Clearance planning: Find the deepest markdown you can offer before you start losing money on dead stock.
- Flash sales and coupons: Verify that a "20% off everything" code does not wipe out your thin-margin SKUs.
- Negotiating with buyers: Know your floor before you sit down, so you never agree to a price below cost.
- Bundle pricing: Test how stacked discounts affect the blended margin of a multi-item offer.
Discounting Without Eroding Your Brand
Frequent, deep discounts train customers to wait for sales and anchor your products to the lower price. Use this calculator to set a disciplined floor, then favor limited-time or volume-based offers over permanent price cuts. A promotion that protects at least a thin positive margin keeps cash flowing without teaching the market that your full price is fiction.
Before you publish any sale, run the numbers here. Knowing your true margin at the discounted price is the difference between a profitable promotion and an expensive lesson.
